Husband runs own business, no pay for a year...

So last year my partner opened a shop. Since then although it's running (just) he has been unable to pay himself anything. We are still establishing the business and the money is no where near where we would like it.
Having just living off my wage, paying this bill this month and missing that one etc I want to find out what we may be entitled too.
I rang working tax as last year our earnings were only mine of £19,349. We are entitled to extra money and will know but how much in the next few weeks when the paperwork is issued. Started to apply online for a council tax reduction, see if that will help. Anything else I may be eligible for? Sorry I know this is stupid but having never claimed in my life I'm lost.
Do you know if you can get any government help with a new business? Weather it's a grant to employ or teach someone?
Thanks for any help in advance.

What are your circumstances? Do you have children?
What type of business is it? Sole trader? Ltd company?0 -
I know in Scotland there's a company called Business Gateway who run free events for anyone to attend about starting a new business. From marketing to accountancy. It's all beginners level and has proved incredibly important to many. I believe there is a lot of support out there for new businesses, but I personally have had limited experience.
Sorry I couldn't be more help.0 -
There is a list of organisations here that may be able to help with advice /suggestions of any possible funding etc

I always worked on this basic assumption with a new business, year one make a loss, year two break even year three start to make some profit.
Did you/oh not have enough capital to support him through the first year? Was there a business plan?0 -
from an earlier post you were a couple with no children or disability. If this is still the case then the entitlement tables for WTC are here https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/tax-credits-entitlement-tables-working-and-have-no-children/tax-credits-entitlement-tables-working-and-have-no-children
(your income last year is probably too high for any payment)0 -

Fine if you have someone else paying the bills.
If you can not hit the ground running, unless you are wealthy, its a bad idea.I do Contracts, all day every day.0 -
We don't have any kids. It's only us. He is operating as a sole trader at the moment.
The capital that we had set aside should have seen us through had we not required to buy accessories for the shop. By that I mean it's a flower shop, so slowly and as needed we have bought bits n bobs and they aren't cheap.
We advertised with a funeral director in his brochure at a cost of over £700 and had nothing from it, advertising is costly and to what extent are we to do this until?
I'm not here for a lecture on spending just ideas on how to help the business.0 -
As mentioned, based on the household income for last year you wouldn't be entitled to WTC.
You'd only be entitled if the household income this tax year was less than £15,500.0 -

Holiday to Australia, New Zealand and Bangkok aren't cheap either.0 -
I see the OP has previously posted on the forum as a 'satisfied customer' of what I assume to be their florist. I know it's difficult to become established and wish the OP all the best, but I think it's a shame they've not been entirely upfront in their use of the forum.0
