Banks reversal charges and cheques

Oh my god, I have just about had enough. It is time to keep money in a jar at home!!!!

I have had a few run-in's with the bank over the years and I am getting quite good at understanding them. Anyway, the point of my rant today is, I issued a cheque for my mum for £340 to Natwest, I bank with HSBC, I paid in a cheque for £400 to my account from my partner's Barclays account and told the cashier that it was to cover items leaving my account today and tomorrow, she said there was nothing leaving my account the following day. I have BEEN TOLD BY THE BANK that if I inform the cashier when I pay items in prior to 3.59pm (precisley!!) that items leaving my account will be honnered by the lending department!

The following day the cheque for £340 leaves my account (2days after I have issued it - been told by bank that it takes 7days before it leaves my account!) and I am in credit by £400 due to the cheque although it is technically not cleared funds but I told the stupid cashier to put a note on and she said NOTHING was due to go out anyway.

They returned the cheque and charged me £25. I then paid the cash into my mums account as she needed the money in her account, (which I took from my blokes account in cash), and the £400 I had paid in I still couldn't draw out until Tuesday even though I could see from my blokes online banking the cheque had left his account on the Friday!!

So I was going to just go down and go mental at them for returning the cheque and charging me. When today (I am trying not to swear) the lovely Natwest RE-PRESENT the £340 cheque so I am now over drawn and then they will reverse it AGAIN charge me AGAIN and charge me for being overdrawn.

I THINK I AM GOING TO HAVE A HEART ATTACK - I CAN'T BREATHE!!!

What I am I going to do about them? I am not prepared to carry on with this stupidity. Anyone got any ideas? Surely they shouldn't have re-presented as it was a personal cheque!!!!!

I don't think you have got close to understanding. The banks will only allow you to draw on cleared funds without charging. Always check the written terms and conditions of accounts and don't rely on what people tell you here's a link to HSBCs http://http://www.hsbc.co.uk/1/PA_1_1_S5/content/uk/pdfs/en/personalbankingterms_conditions.pdf;jsessionid=0000UgxjWbibDwE15FPmIYHIuYH:12c58t1e1
There is no reason why they shouldn't have represented the cheque just because it was a personal cheque. To have avoided this part of your problem should have cancelled the cheque.
Sorry but situation is of your own making if you don't want charges don't issue cheques or make payments until you have cleared fund available.

  • Thanks Nigel :rotfl:
My whole predicament has arrisen from the banks taking the mick and offering credit when I didn't have enough to pay for it, and then putting charges on top of charges. Added with the effort of just trying to LIVE!

Trying my hardest to get money in line before things leave my account, but things get harder to manage without the help of the lovely overdraft (which I don't have) to buffer between payments. Not everything falls in line by the due dates and once you miss one payment and then end up back paying you never quite catch up with yourself.

Banks don't seem to have any sympathy for this and also other stupid situations like tax credits add to the problem.

It really is true, I would be better off not working and on benefits. Then I would be raking it in, no stress and no rent or council tax or childcare. Trying to do the right thing has done nothing but cause problems for me and my family and we always seem to be paying for it - literally.

Sorry, Nigel but I don't think that the situation is of my own making. I just think it is about time I was given a break. Yes I can see that money needs to be available, but I am trying to sort it out. I am not over £15,000 in debt for luxuries, posh cars, nice holidays and getting my hair done, I am trying to pay my bills, feed my family and get to work - just so that the system and banks can keep screwing up my life for me and taking back every penny I earn.

    Anyway, hows things for you?
  • Yeah I know,

But am feeling less hostile now.

This forum is great to get frustrations out.

I am currently looking at all of the info and seeing where I can make changes, and the council tax banding is v.interesting.

Just been on to the phone to my bank and they are going to honour the cheque for £340 this time even though there are NO funds in my account!!!

You see, I can't win because they keep changing the rules.

    Anyway,
Here is to a debt free, bank charge free, well managed account in the future.

I am also on to my local MP about the tax credits right now:T

Doesn't that now mean your mum will have received £680 from you? Is that what you intended?

Dear Ihatebankswithapassion, I sympathise. The banks system is there to make money though, and you have to rmember it is not a free service to you unless you learn the rules, and play them at their own games. Use your frustration to get yourself straight, then start stoozing or whatever Martin calls it to get even!

  • No, I did not want to give my mum £680!!!

So she now owes me, but she can't draw it out of her account until it has 'cleared' in mine for approx 3 more days I reckon!!!!

Don't the banks earn interest and put money in stocks & shares whilst you think it is clearing? Isn't it held in a bankers gambling/profit making limbo until it actually hits our accounts?

Because that money isn't in my account, and it isn't available in my mums account - so I reckon they must be playing with it!!!!!!!

She better not go on a spending spree with my money that I didn't have
