Electricity and Gas - Rented Property

Hi All,

I’m wondering if you can advise me a little here….

I’ve moved in to a brand new property 3 weeks ago and the only thing I have left to do is sort out my gas and electricity. I have a gas meter key so this is no issue. My electricity meter is in a locked cupboard outside of my property for which my landlord and myself do not have a key, my landlord pays a management company ground rent but I had a copy of his agreement with them for which there was no mention of the electricity meter.

When I moved in to the property there was an e-on smart meter left on the side which apparently will provide me with up to date electricity readings. I don’t want to go with e-on, for my type of property and usage they are more expensive and I am wanting to sign up elsewhere. Do any of you know, will this smart meter work and provide me with readings if I opt to go with another provider? If not, do I have a right to access my electricity metre to take regular readings? I don’t want my bills based upon estimates.

Thanks in advance!!
