Want to sell my car but it has no MOT, advice?

    also aside from the cost. it will make the car sell very very slowly. You'll wait ages for someone to come along and take a chance with a non mot'd car. So if you want to take a hit on sale price AND want to see your old car lying around without sellling for a long period of time then go for it.

    I think it's more likely to be the hobbyist / wannabe traders that'd be interested in a (potential) MOT fail. They'd probably pay even less than the professionals, though might try and just drive it home illegally.

    Most buyers will assume that if you haven't MOT'd it, then you know it's not worth getting it to pass (since they don't know if you've put it in and it's failed, or if you just never bothered).

    Although sensible people will put the car reg through
    https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history and see if it has been MOT'd and what it failed on then work out a cost.


    The MOT status really does make a hell of a difference to joe public.

    Good point. Though I suspect a lot of people (like me) aren't aware of that facility.

    Get it MOT'd and then sell it. No brainer.

    Agreed. Though it's not seen (in law) as serious enough to get a licence endorsement. If I thought a car was safe, but just had no MOT I might be prepared to drive it.

    Presumably without the MOT, the car would be impounded and there'd be a release fee.

    The buyer could presumably drive it straight to a pre booked MOT if they wanted to stay legal.
