Another co-washer here.
I have very curly hair and tend to co-wash every 3-4 days. I use shampoo about once every 4-5 weeks just to make sure I'm getting rid of any product build up (cones, etc) and a proper clarifying shampoo every 3 months or so. Other than that, I stick to conditioner washing but to be honest, there are so many companies jumping on the cleansing conditioner bandwagon at the moment, that there's a lot of choice there too.
The fact that my hair is curly and therefore, naturally dry, means that I go for very moisturising conditioners which probably would be a bad idea for people with straight and/or fine hair because it could weigh it down.
I never had a problem with scalp issues when just co washing- in fact before I was curly, I used a chemical relaxer for years and even then I could only use sulfate free shampoos because my scalp hates sulfates. Co-washing is something my scalp loves because it's so much gentler but you need make sure you're agitating your scalp properly when rinsing. If you leave conditioner on your scalp, that will not only cause itching, flaking and irritation but is likely to also cause oily roots.
If you do find that you still have scalp issues, try using a cleansing conditioner rather than just conditioner only washing. Alternatively, you can add some tee tree or rosemary oil to your conditioner - these products do help massively with scalp irritation in my experience.0 -
Ah i have realised, this isn't going to work with hair dye

Is your hair suitable for henna to dye it? Minimalist beauty used henna on her hair while co washing. I use a natural coconut milk, coconut oil and shea butter shampoo bar because I was struggling with allergies and hair loss and it looks amazing now. My natural curls are much more defined and glossy and look like GHD curls rather than a frizzball.
I sometimes use more shea butter or coconut oil for additional moisturising, I have very greasy roots and it seems to have helped considerably with this, although it's been a long journey. I've given up hair dye completely now (I'm 38) and have light/medium brown hair but have only a couple of greys that aren't really noticeable."I cannot make my days longer so I strive to make them better." I have thought about using Wen, they do a cleansing conditioner range.
But I love Philip Kingsley elastizer & shampoo.0 -

I use a clarifying shampoo and deep conditioner the day before dying hair and use deep conditioner after rinsing the dye out, never had any problems with the dye not taking or my hair being really dry afterwards.
I've been using sulfate and silicone free products for nearly 2 years now."I am an insomniac, so I was really excited when I was able to get a full night's sleep. I said to a friend, 'Just keep your fingers crossed that I get lucky again tonight!' Realizing what I said, I tried to correct it and said, 'No, I mean, I just hope that I get some tonight!' After that, I decided to shut up."0
