Ex Interviewer is joining my team

Hi all,

I am just looking for advice.
I was unhappy for a while at work and wasn't getting anywhere so I interviewed elsewhere.
I didn't get the position and things have got better at work - to the point where I am no longer looking elsewhere.

My interviewer at the role I didn't get is now joining my team. I need advice as to what I do as I am very worried he will tell my boss.

Any advice would be great. I am 27 and just trying to develop myself - really worried he could throw a spanner in the works - I had no idea at the time he was moving to my company!

Thanks,
Estrella

You are perfectly entitled to search for other jobs at any time and for any reason. You are not a slave!

The only problem would be if you lied about being sick (for example) in order to attend the interview. But if you took a day's holiday then there should be no problem.

Otherwise I doubt your employer would care, even if your interviewer happened to remember you (not all that likely) or mention it to anyone (even less likely).

Assuming you told no lies to either attend or during the interview you'll be fine - if you did then this is one of those times when karma has a habit of appearing

Assuming they know/recognise you then best thing is to discuss it with them and clear the air rather than worrying about what they might be thinking
  • Thanks for the responses!

He is joining as a Head Of - so much higher than me.
Also - no lies for the interviews - they were all before or after work.

When they asked why I wanted to leave I explained the reasons - looking back I didn't say anything bad about the company, just the normal i.e. slow to innovate etc.

When he joins in a week - shall I pull him aside for a chat?

I think if hes above you hes more likely to be utterly responsible in these matters.

If you have doubts, I'd go ahead and ask if you can have a quick meeting with them and explain your situation. I'm certain they will calm your worries and tell you to chill out ;)

Tell them you are a lot happier now in your role and with their addition to the team you're certain it can get even better.

Odds are they won't even remember you if the interview was a while ago. They might think you look familiar but can't place you - and you just smile and say nothing. I wouldn't remind them of the fact they interviewed you - and if they mention it just say "Yes I wasn't too happy here at the time but I'm glad I decided to stay in the end as it is very different now"

Honestly I believe you are over thinking the situation.

I certainly wouldn't bring it to their attention that you once thought of leaving when they either may not remember or may not care.

Don't forget, since then he himself has been through the process of looking elsewhere so it'd be hypocritical in the least to say anything.
  • He will definitely remember me as the interview was about a month and a half ago.

If you think it best not to bring it up then I can do that, however it may be awkward.
I will just be polite as possible when he come next week - hopefully this doesn't damage me.

    Thanks for all the help!

A month and a half ago - he probably had x other people to interview as well.

I think you're worried about nothing to be honest. Personally, I wouldn't approach him at all, he probably vaguely remembers your face from somewhere and nothing else.

Even if he did tell your boss (which strikes me as an odd thing to do anyway) what trouble could you possibly be in? Everyone looks for new jobs for a variety of reasons - you're not their salve and are free to do as you please!
