Barclays saying they have no loan records prior to 1999?

I spoke to Barclays PPI reclaims his afternoon who have given me the reference number of a loan with PPI I had between Jan 1997-Dec 1998 but they say they can't investigate any further as they cannot find the details from 'so long ago'. They say it's down to me to produce the paperwork otherwise they will not look at it? I've searched my home but have found nothing so far, are they actually allowed to fob me off like this? Is there elsewhere I can go to try and find my PPI info, such as Barclays Insurance which I understand may be in Dublin?

I very much doubt that either will have records from 18 years ago, unless you have any paperwork this is a no go.

If you have a spare tenner, you could do a SAR request, ask for all info they hold on you and see what that comes back with, don't hold your breath though just in case they have no info.

Your only option is to send a SAR and £10.
This doesn't mean they'll have any info left, it just means they'll search.
They are only obliged to keep records as long as necessary, which, after 1999, is no longer necessary, so they are not fobbing you off, they are only doing what they have to do.
