How ridiculous is this? Churchill

Churchill: "Your quote is £580.63"
Me: "That's ridiculously high."
Churchill: "It's the best price we can give you sir"
Me: "But my renewal quote is £290 and you guarantee to beat renewal quotes"
Churchill: "We can give it to you for £289 sir"

Barmy.

The fact that they said 580 is the "best quote", then promptly halving it?

It will be £289 this year and then revert upwards to the £580 (or thereabouts) the following year. It is a marketing ploy to buy in business, grow the company and hope that inertia prevents people moving the following year.

Of course it is, but why not just give the best price in the first place? With the knowledge that renewal quotes are loaded, the abundance of 0800 numbers and screenscrapers these days, I can't believe anyone will still just renew and be done with it.

Because their £580 quote is their technical rate for the risk. The call centre operator then has the ability to add in commercial discounts to get it down to a competetive figure. Must admit, its a bloomin big discount but that is part of the current promotion being run by Churchill.
