Tool for removing nuts and bolts from awkward locations

On a couple of occasions I've had to try and remove nuts* where there wasn't enough space to get a spanner in there. What is the correct tool in this scenario? I've seen you can get socket wrenches with an adjustable head so you can unscrew it at an angle which might work, but usually they have quite long attachments which again might not fit.
And what about nuts on pipework where there's no end to put the socket over so you're forced to attach it from the side rather than the end?
I've come across a couple of these in my kitchen lately and luckily I've been dismantling it so just smashed the area around it to get access, but obviously this is not usually possible.
I'm thinking there must be some kind of super tool I've yet to see before.
*the kind that attaches to a bolt you filthy person

....... or a ratchet spanner which allows the spanner to go over the nut and any screw/bolt that is sticking out.0

A speed spanner is the same size as a normal spanner but with an open end and works similarly to a ratchet.0
