  • Gents I've looked at plusnet's site, the Landline is much the same as BT.
I have though just come off the phone with Postoffice phone.
Even though it clearly says that Text messaging from suitable phone the cs person belligerently refused to accept the fact.

The challenge with leaving Sky broadband is that it only costs £2:50, and has a long time to run

Re the Post Office phone, I suspect the CS person wasn't in the know about the text messaging facility.

Plusnet makes sense if you were going to switch your line rental + broadband, but not if you just want to switch your line rental. The market is now geared towards offering line rental + broadband as a package together.

Gents I've just come off the phone with Sky, they offered me prices clearly intended to scare me off, even less enticing that BT. It's galling that I cant just pay a reduced line rental to not have the phone service

If you just want straightforward cheap line rental, then you could consider say Vivaciti or falconNet.
  • Plusnet as I said earlier charge much the same as their masters, I shall though investigate Vivaciti and falconNet.
  • Plusnet are currently offering 'free' broadband for a year if you sign up to them, then it's £9.99 a month - the line rental is £16.99.

What you then do after a year is look at what offers are out there on the market - another provider will probably be offering something similar - and call up Plusnet and ask them to match that price, or otherwise you'll switch. A bit tedious, yes, but that's the way things are now.
  • Falcon net, appear to not exist any more, both of their contact numbers are unrecognised or unanswered at before 6pm
  • I am highly surprised that Vivaciti and IDNet landlines are not promoted on MSE more. IDNet offers a landline only service from £11 a month and is a 30 day rolling contract not a lengthy period like some providers I could mention.
  • Thanks every body I have taken my custom to Vivaciti. Monthly £12 with caller display. I shall either keep using call 1-8-8-6-6 or sign up to skype any time and pay a lump sum to get a good discount
  • Hi every one,

I'd hope that it's all right to ask here.

Some years ago, there was a big scandal about mobile phones causing brain tumors. Have things been corrected?

There was never any concrete scientific evidence that established a link between the 2. A lot of it is/was supposition and the media whipping up a storm.

Plenty of information on google from cancer charities/scientists etc if you want to read into it more.
  • Kenco5---A comedian in our midst! Seriously if there was good reason to believe that mobile phones not sold by BT had become safer, I'd give one serious thought. I understand that £5 or 6 gets you a lot of call time and text now
