Buying new car tomorrow - VED query

My wife and I identified our new car today (not brand new, but new to us), and we are collecting it tomorrow morning.
I sorted out the insurance this afternoon, which starts at midnight tonight, but it's just occurred to me that I would need to cancel the remaining VED on our current car, and purchase VED for the new car.
When should I do this? I could cancel the remaining VED on our current car this evening, but would that mean that I can't drive it to the car place tomorrow to drop it off and collect our new car?
I can't purchase the VED for the new car as I don't have the V5C form yet - would I need to do that at the car place tomorrow before I drive it home?

you get the dealer to fill in the name of his business etc on your log book top right and its your responsibility to post this to swansea and await confirmation car has been sold into trade, this automatically gets a cheque sent to you for any remaining months of road tax automatically
you get new keeper slip from dealer for your replacement car and you either tax it over the phone online or at a local car tax accepting post office do this before you leave his car park0 -
You don't have to post the form off for your old car anymore, you can do it online - I did so when I bought a car a couple of months ago. Made it much easier!0

You pay for April on both cars so no issues with cancelling the tax tomorrow.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0

When you say "new car", do you MEAN "new car"? If so, then it is taxed for you as part of the registration process.
If you mean "new-to-you", aka "used", then the dealer may tax it for you, or you may need to tax it yourself using the doc ref on the green V5C/2 new keeper slip which they should give you.0 -

The OP states not brand new, but new to them in their opening line!0
