Having been a longstanding customer of the Co-op bank, I enrolled for online banking to get the £4 reward and did so at the local branch, so I could ask questions.

I queried if there were enough direct debits to qualify (4 required) and was told there were 5 (3 monthly, 1 over 8 months and 1 annually), but that all 5 would qualify.

This agrees with posts on here, where people have been advised that direct debits do not need to be monthly to qualify for bonus paying accounts (with other institutions).

However, the Co-op call centre person, I spoke to today, said that only 3 of the direct debits count as they have to be monthly to qualify and that the branch mis-informed me.

We don't have any of the latter or anyone needing regular payments, but I'm hoping to get Severn Trent to change our direct debits to 12 instead of 8. (I don't know why they made it 8,as at the time it didn't matter, but the website says they calculate direct debit by dividing annual fee by 12).

Having read forum sections on savings, in the past, it does appear that few bank accounts will draw direct debits (Tesco being an exception).
