fitting CCTV wire from loft to outside wall

I want to fit some cctv cameras on the outside walls.
It's a bungalow, I will be keeping the recording box in the loft and need to get wires outside.
The wires are coax.
Is it likely to be best to take wires out where the roof meets the walls near where the cameras will be fitted or on gable ends?

Thanks

  • Both are doable, it really all depends on access, what your roof to wall join is like etc etc.

Best bet is to go into the loft and have a look.

easier to drill through a mortar joint on gable end wall than crawl to shallow part of loft in my opinion. Drill from the outside if its brick outer / block inner wall the block is dead soft so pick a mortar joint in outer brick, also damage on breakthrough will be inside. If you need a large hole (pre fitted cable ends) drill a small pilot hole first.

assuming your loft space is a typical one with nothing more than thick insulation down i would think carefully about leaving the recording device up there as it gets hot in summer and cold in winter up there and could be a fire hazard

    just saying

Your going to struggle getting cables through close to the roof, climbing across the beams, you'll be on your belly by the time your 1/2 way there, strandling said beams to avoid bringing the ceiling down, then reaching across the end gap, through the spiders, to then pull cables through...... You'll almost certainly need a "cable scout".

    Not my idea of fun.

My CCTV, one camera went through the corner of a uPVC window frame (easily repaired), the other two are behind glass inside the house, hanging from brackets I fabricated to hang over the window when it's shut.
I'm about to move one to the rear of my garage, but i'm either going down the wireless route or putting my old laptop (used as a motion sensing DVR) in the garage itself (partly because I like the idea of having a laptop in my workshop :) ).
