Replace 1970s bungalow floor after marley tiles and vinyl disaster

It would be great if someone could give an opinion on the prices I’ve been quoted to replace the floor in my bungalow.

Quick background – it’s a 1972 bungalow. I wanted the worn-out carpets replaced with vinyl. I took up all the carpets and underlay myself and there were marley tiles underneath. A local flooring shop (recommended to me!!) came to give me a quote and I asked if vinyl could go on top of these tiles and was told yes it could. The correct answer would have been NO it can’t! Now I have a bungalow with vinyl flooring and very bright yellow patches on it. I’ve lived with this for over two years as I have failed to get the shop to do anything about it. So, I need it redone.

So, it’s 100 square meters (6 rooms and hall) and I need the following:

Move and replace furniture in each room
Disconnect and remove and reconnect and replace washing maching, diswasher and gas cooker
Remove existing vinyl
Remove marley tiles
Dispose of vinyl and marley tiles
Screed (latex)
Lay Karndean (Knight tile, £23.99 per sq meter)

I have been quoted £7,000 by a local guy (West Wales) and £8,000 by a department store. What’s worrying me is not the price if that is really what it costs, but being over-charged, possibly as I am female and live alone (if men really do that?? I may be being horribly old-fashioned and so horribly unfair thinking that - but it was a male colleague who suggested yesterday that I was being taken advantage of!)

NB I have no one to help me move my own furniture and most pieces are too big to move by myself.

Many thanks for reading this and I'd be so grateful for any thoughts :o

The money saving way would be to reduce the workload that you are paying for. Remove your furniture, and unplug your appliances. Do not remove the gas cooker -this requires a GasSafe registered person to remove and then back again to re-fit. Take your vinyl to the recycling centre, or pay the council the nominal sum to collect it.

Regarding the overall price you know it is a lot of money. You can do the maths - 100 metres of Karndean will be £2399!

I would not spend £7000-8000 on a floor covering for a 1972 bungalow but that is your choice.
