Husband lost his job with no warning - benefits?

My husband was told on Friday that he was being let go, effective immediately, because he hasn't been doing his job properly. This is the third person they've sacked in 6 weeks in that place. They didn't follow the company's policy for dismissal, he had no verbal or written warning. However he's been working there for less than a year so can't really do anything about it. He's been working around 2 hours over his contracted hours a day, working through lunch, we're both gutted.

We have no savings. We have some debts - loan and credit cards. We have a mortgage.

I don't work because we have two children on the autistic spectrum. One is at school but the other is at home full-time as mainstream school was too stressful for him, and he doesn't start his new school until September. He gets DLA and I get carer's allowance for him. The other don't but I'm about to apply.

My husband also gets a forces pension of around £400 a month.

What benefits, if any are we entitled to? We're both seriously panicking. I'm going to try and pick up some evening bar work and he's applied for every job under the sun.

They are paying him until next Friday (he was let go yesterday - Friday).

It doesn't help that our kids require constant supervision, it's almost impossible for us to sit down and try and sort out our finances because the kids can't be ignored for a second.

I want to cry. But it wouldn't help!

Why don't both of you apply for every job under the sun? Nothing says that you have to be the person who stays home with your autistic child, and you could easily swap the CA to your husband if you got a full-time job.

BTW you have my sympathies with regards to finding it difficult to put aside the time to concentrate on sorting finances - I have to fit everything into three hours of the evening once I've put our son to bed; and as he gets older, his bedtime will get later ...

Im not applying for full-time work because firstly, my son who is off school with severely challenging behaviour is very attached to me, and doesn't get on with his dad. By that I mean he constantly tries to bite him and is very anxious around him. It would be a disaster.

It often takes me until 9pm to get the kids to sleep. I have psoriasis too and the treatment my skin needs takes up to an hour on top most nights.

I'm looking at doing bar work, but on top of the stress of the kids, I'm scared my psoriasis will just get exponentially worse and then I won't be able to work or look after the kids and then we'll be in an awful position if I'm hospitalised. (My psoriasis is pretty bad, and covers a lot of me.)

Lastly, my husband has a much better earning potential than I do. So it makes more sense for him to work.

He's looking at driving jobs, but then he will be away a lot and again I don't know how I will have the kids on my own for such an extended period of time. :(

    Lots of stress.

But we've found the benefits calculator and will go from there!

    Contribution - based JSa.

Are you getting the disability element of CTC for your child who is in receipt of DLA?

Worth updating HMRC re TC of your current situation.

Check if you can get Council Tax Support from your LA.

Should be for cont based AFAIK would be for income based, OP talk to your mortgage provider see if they can put you on interest only for 6 months or if they can offer any other advice, and look at one of the benefits calculators like "turn2us"
