pre authorisations cant be removed by the banks, any pending transactions that are not called by the company after 10 working days are returned back to your available balance.

you are not in an overdraft unauthorised or not till the payment actually debited from your account, so even thought it says your - whatever this is due to pending transactions that have yet to be debited so you cant get charged till its processed.

The banks cant intervene as they are the middle man in the process of contract between you and the company, so it just makes sure you don't spend the money twice and create a unauthorised overdraft situation.

For example Tesco don't take payments for a few days after you have bought your shopping so the bank put the amount you have spent into a holding pot ready for when Tesco takes the money from the bank, this could take 3 or 4 days, if its not preauthorised, you could then spend the money again at the pub the next day and then find your Tesco transaction comes out and then you are then charged for the overdraft you didn't know you were in, because you thought the money in your account was available to spend....

This happens quite a lot with hotel bookings, UK and abroad, where they preauthorise a set amount to cover any damages to room, and therefore balance is reduced accordingly and the amount is returned back to the account within days of checkout, and car hire at airports, which can be a pain if you then dont have access to your own money.

Credit cards are better for this situation so you wont lose access to your bank account balance
