Relative with terminal cancer

Good morning MoneySavers,

I'm looking for some guidance as the travel insurance small print is giving me brain ache.

We booked a holiday through Sunshine in October 2015 and we're due to fly in May this year, however, in December 2015 we discovered my darling grandad was riddled with cancer and it couldn't be treated.

Unfortunately, we made the schoolboy error of not booking the travel insurance at the same time as the holiday!

His condition is steady at the moment but we haven't booked travel insurance yet; should the worst happen, would we be covered in any way?

The small print varies and some providers ask that you include relatives medical conditions when booking the insurance and others say that the death would have to be 'unexpected' for them to cover the costs.

Any help would be massively appreciated!

Olivia

I think that you will have to telephone some insurance brokers and see what they have to say. You will have to be precise about the prognosis: a death that is highly likely within the next two years is a very different proposition from a death that is expected during May!

Sorry to hear about your grandad.

Sometimes the insurance premium can be very high and the insurance excess not low enough.

How far away is the holiday?

Is it possible to change it to a later date?

  • We're due to fly on the 25th of May - never even thought about checking if we could change the dates! Thank you :)

Is a grandad likely to be covered by insurance anyway? Often it is immediate family.

  • I am travelling with my mother and it is her father - it's highly unlikely any insurance we book now will cover the likelihood of us having to cancel due to his condition deteriorating at the rate it is so we will see if we can change the passenger names and let friends take our place.

Again it still might only cover her and not you.
