O/S Daily Thread for Saturday 16th April 2016

Options
This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” is fine.
Chin up, Titus out.

    Morning all

DGD5 and I have been up since just after 5, she's watching Tom & Jerry whilst I post on here with my first cuppa of the day, hubby is still in bed as he was on lates last night.

DGD has fed the fish I've folded some washing that dried on the maiden last night and hung another load, I don't think the weather will be dry enough to hang washing out today.

DGD & I will make cakes in a sec and DGD18mths will be arriving at 10ish until 3 or 4. I will collapse in a heap with my crochet when they have gone home.

Ongoing battles at work to get enough paper delivered to do my job, so stupid the way they carry on.

    Have a good day everyone.
    Hugs Hester

    Morning everyone

HH - thanks for starting us off, sounds like you're going to have a full day yet again, please take time for yourself and your DH at some point over the weekend, otherwise you're going to burn out x

Hugs and get well wishes to those that want/need them x

Happy birthday to those with a birthday x

Now light, dark, dreich, dreary, wet underfoot and still raining, looks set in for the day, rained continously yesterday until well into the afternoon, but started again some time during the night, it's cold too.

Dinner last night was Hm quiche, salad, and (chips for the menfolk), pasta salad. I had quiche and salad, was lovely, all eaten. Tonight we'll be having prawns in black bean sauce, spare ribs, veg and egg fried rice, noodles and pancake rolls, it's a bit of a cheat meal as the rice and noodles are ready to just put in dishes in the oven but I do need to make the prawns in black bean sauce (mix prawns and sauce in a pan and let them cook for a short while, whilst other food is finishing cooking. We're going to the hospital this afternoon and not sure how long we'll be there and how things are going to be, (may not feel like cooking when we get back) so thought something easy to just throw in the oven was the best option.

I was more productive yesterday, SM was very quiet when I arrived, but as it was early and pouring with rain, most shoppers go to the new MrT as it has a car park under the store, so you don't get wet going in/out of the store or to pack your shopping in the car. Spent more than I wanted to again but did get some bargains, toilet rolls, kitchen towel and some meat that was on offer. I needed to replace the wine I bought for dad's birthday also, we'll be visiting them this morning. I got ironing done, and there's 1 wash in the machine at the moment that will go in once everyone has used the showers etc before we go out. I made a victoria sponge so will put the filling in that later today, I also made a dozen mince pies and a dozen chocolate tarts. Menu plan is in place for the coming week too, hoping to not spend anymore on food as nothing really needed. I have plenty of most supplies so should be able to make extras if needed.

    Have good Saturdays' everyone x

    Keep safe and well x

Morning all. Thanks for starting us off HESTER. Any reply yet to your e mail? Glad to hear you got there safely JACKIE and the cottage meets with your approval! Have a good week.

It's a glorious start here with blue sky all the way and the sun is shining. Sadly rain forecast for this afternoon! A repeat of yesterday by the sound of it.

A bit of a whip round this morning with the duster and vac and the bathroom to clean and that's my lot for today! May pop in town later as we have run out of mini spotlight bulbs and I also need a spare battery for the digi-scales. The ironing can wait for another day!

I made the Bolognaise yesterday from the BSD book. It was ok and palatable enough but not quite as tasty as the fattening variety! I had it with courgetti. I got a butternut squash yesterday to make "Boodles" in the spitalizer for a change. (I noticed them in Sainsbury's ready spiralized for silly money!) This morning's brekkie will be the poached egg and avocado I am getting addicted to!

Have a good day everyone and (((HUGS))) to all needing/wanting them. CANDLELIGHT and HILSTEP I hope things are going as well as they can. Take care all xx

    Morning everyone.

    Thanks for the thread HH.

It's very bright just now, not sure how long that'll last though. The forecast is for 'Arctic winds'.

Today I'm taking Mum shopping to W*itrose this morning and then she wants to go out for a drive to somewhere like Drymen. She's no longer a confident driver but wants to keep her car still. As long as she's a safe driver then I'm content.

So that'll be my day. In the past I may have not wanted to do these things but I'm more aware of time passing and the scarcity of many more opportunities.

No idea what food will be.

I hope everyone has a great Saturday.

    Morning All,

Hester - I,m worn out reading your post...
Nmic - We,re trying to eat out of freezer/cupboard too, but your menu sounds a lot nicer than ours, and the cakes win, so I'll pop round later ;)

We're off to pick up DD - She gets in at 7am tomorrow, but due to our poor boat service, it's easier to go up the night before,

I cannot believe how fast that 3 months has gone - one minute we were packing her bag, the next going to collect her... She has had an amazing time, some of it a true eye opener, and something she will remember for ever.

Weather looks bleaughhhhh - she's going to feel the cold, it's 37 in Kenya :)

She's craving a Chinese takeaway, so that's dinner sorted tomorrow night, something cheap for us tonight eaten in our bargain £35 hotel room :)

    Take care all x

    Morning :hello:

Islandmaid I can't believe it's been three months already! I'm glad she enjoyed herself.
    How's your neck?

Someone I know bought an old house and is doing it up, she took the useless unsafe woodburner out to replace it with a useful one. The old one is in my garden, covered in rust with a wonky door and I think there's a crack on the back but I haven't looked too closely yet. We took our gas fire out years ago, covered the hole over and put a sofa in front of it. When we get the lounge skimmed (eventually!) I'm going to clean up the burner and put it where the gas fire used to be. It can't be used but I can put candles or fairylights in it, or maybe just fill it with bits of wood so it looks real :D There was never a fire surround and mantlepiece, just the gas fire shoved into the wall, it always looked odd to me. My dad loves his projects, he made a fab surround a while ago by chopping off chunks of wood with an axe, I'm might ask him to make one for me.

I can't get much done at the moment, it was decided that the hall, stairs and landing and the bathroom should all be painted at the same time. Ridiculous with a bouncy dog in the house but after five days of aimless furniture shifting, I'm relieved that some paint has finally made it out of the tins and on to the walls. The hall is empty at the moment so I'm going to give the floor a good clean, the bookcase filled with DVDs is not allowed back in and neither is the tatty old chair. Nor the pile of stuff which always gets left there 'just for now'. I have a nice chair (with ugly cushion covers, I'm going to get some nice material for it) to go by the front door and I want some nice coat hooks.

The weather's not great but I'll stay out with Scampi for as long as possible this morning. We'll come back either when the rain gets too heavy or he's had enough and starts kicking off – I can guess which one will happen first :D

The alarm woke me at seven as the painter is coming round around eight to put the colour on the living room walls. Dishes washed and kettle on and roasting tray steeping

Family are all coming round for lunch to celebrate youngest's job which starts on Monday. Older dd has cooked lamb and is bringing it with her which is so thoughtful. I had promised youngest a shopping expedition but she was not feeling up to it so we had a quiet day instead. She had a look at a shopping site instead and ordered a couple of coats and a pair of shoes which will arrive sometime today so we are hoping there will be something she likes. If not I can take it to a collect place nearby to return it.

I made us home made soup with a salad roll for lunch yesterday and then a chicken and mushroom curry last night so feel we have been quite healthy. Even managed to freeze a portion of the curry.

Sun is shining but it feels quite cold and has just been raining so laundry drying is chancy.

Hugs to hilstep, judi, candlelight and anyone who could do with one.

    Morning All

The sun is shining! I've stripped my bed and some is on the line already. Bought a new fitted sheet yesterday (£4.99 in @ldi), noticed that the one on the bed was a bit bobbly. All going on the line in a minute.

Had a lovely tea yesterday at a friends house, a buffet of lots of things I like! The shopping was delivered before 10 so I didn't have to wait up for it.

I'm going to start the BSD on Monday so have got in lots of the stuff I need, I'll wander down to @ldi later to get the fresh veg. Going to try to make hummus this morning, will do some for DD too as she loves it (although she may not if I make it!).

I have potatoes to plant so I'll get that done too, they have to go into bags but it was quite successful last year. I've bought some blue ones which could be interesting!

Islandmaid - that was a quick 3 months!
JackieO - Your cottage sounds lovely, have a good week and I hope the weather improves.

Have a good weekend. Take care. XX

Went to bed with sheeting down rain and woken up to a sunny if a little cold day, but we don't mind as long as its dry.Just going into town for a mooch and to buy some chicken for tonights dinner (curry is on the menu) Then we may take a drive over to Stoke on Trent this afternoon.Really pleased with the cottage so warm and clean and lots of extra bits provided.

Very relaxing and no grandchildren to hassle either of us (June has two year old twin DGC)

I am looking out of the window on a very beautiful hillside with sheep grazing,so peaceful and tranquil, yet only about ten minutes drive from the town

Right must be off, have a good weekend chums

    JackieO xx
  • Morning ((((((((((hugs)))))))))) if you need one. The sun has just broken through, but its blooming cold, typical I turn the heat off and the weather changes. Tough, I will light the sitting room fire this evening for an hour or two.

I am going to start putting stuff in crates for going away next week. One of these days I might get to stay somewhere where I will not have to cook, it will be expensive but so what. I have been cooking meals The last time we stayed in an hotel was in 1998 in France for a weekend break.

OH is jig sawing, the chap is coming this morning (I hope) to fit the outside tap, no more having to carry watering cans to water the garden. He has a couple of other little things to do.
