architect or structural engineer

Hi
I have finally convinced my husband that an extension is a good idea! I know that I need plans, planning permission and building regs, as well as a builder eventually! However at the moment I don't know whether an architect or a structural engineer is the best/cost effective route for getting the ball rolling. I have been recommended a structural engineer by a colleague but don't know if an architect would be better.
I have a fairly good idea of what I want in the extension, a 2 story extension which is the full length of the house on the side. However not sure if an architect could give me other ideas or supplementary ideas about windows/doors etc.
Thanks for any advice.

I would use an architect. Some structural engineers seem to design extensions etc but the designs I have come across tend to be an interpretation of what they are told by the client, in which case you end up with something way outside their budget with no design flair.
Both times I've redesigned a structural engineers work, I've managed to tick the requirement boxes for clients and be sensible about building routes and costs.
I do think architects can be optimistic about the cost of a build but structural engineers are outside that pricing world, really.
You will need a structural engineer for calculations on suppoeting beams etc, so the recommendation will probably come in handy.
If you spend money in the right places, you'll save money elsewhere.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

I would begin with checking building regs and issues around planning. In our council, both the building inspector and the planners will happily have a chat about extensions (they regard it as time saved later)
The reason I suggest this is that the issues that arise may limit your design. I have designed without an architect because the limitations + my own requirements made the basic design obvious.
You could also ask a local builder to come and have a look (if you are thinking of using one, or one of the "flat pack" companies) - they may be able to recommend an architectural technician, or an architect they have worked with.
I think architects can do a great job, but I'd do some ground work yourself first. I'm a big fan of Home Building & Renovating magazine, and if it's convenient it's worth going to one of their shows.0
