People have two options, buy in an area you can afford and commute or get a better paid job so you can afford the house in the area you want.

    It's as simple as that

    Good luck fj

people should not complain if they can afford to buy. they should move somewhere else they can buy then. its simple. i hate it when you hear all the time in the media how FTBs are getting screwed from the high prices. wel sorry but its their own fault for earning low. find a job paying higher by gaining new skills!!!

Loads of people have said move to a diff area. Is there any chance of transferring to a diff part of the country, or get a new job in a new company in a new area. You would have no problem getting a mortgage on 24k in Liverpool

Well, to answer your question I bought a house in Woodley (five minutes from Reading) for 260k in April last year. It's now worth about 310k.

I managed this by having a partner and with a LOT of help from his parents (i.e. His dad stumped up our 55k deposit).

We would have had no help in hell otherwise, however our combined salaries are only around 45k.

Buy-To-Let landlord not being able to afford another property does not get much sympathy from me.

When I wanted to buy my first house it was not affordable in the town I worked, so I bought 15 miles down the road in an area most people looked down their noses at.

You can afford what you can afford; there is no magic way to get round that fact by moaning it's unfair.
    Been away for a while.

24k is about the lowest possible wage in Reading.

    I bet it's not!

When have single people ever been able to afford a property on their own?

When they live in places where it isn't stupidly expensive?

I'm on my second solo bought property, a house this time, nice area in the NW, on a lower wage than the OP. Working people should be able to buy a home in the place they grew up where their jobs and families are, even just a one bed flat if they're on their own.

I guess the rest of us didn't get the memo!

(Nor the financial help from their families that you were so fortunate to get.)

Buy a studio, whatever you can afford......then upgrade in a few years if you can.

I would love to live in London . zone 1 ideally.

I don't want to work in a demanding job though, one requiring high level qualifications and experience.... Something earning maybe 25k will suit

I don't want to have to commute

How will such demands be arranged with no action on my part. Surely this a basic right for me to have what I believe I am entitled to?
Left is never right but I always am.
