  • The MSE Callchecker is no longer. See below (in particular the bit in bold):

It used to be all about override providers – what happened to them?

Until recently a key trick when making cheap international and UK calls was using what's known as an 'override provider'.
These are firms that give you a special 'access number' which you dial first – then once connected you dial the number you're actually calling. (We used to list these providers in our UK Callchecker and International Callchecker tools, which unfortunately have now been removed following the changes described below.)
However in July 2015 Ofcom introduced new rules on non-geographic number charges, which hiked the cost of calling many override providers. As a result, in most cases override providers AREN'T the cheapest option any more, though as we explain below they do still beat simply picking up your mobile or landline.
This is the first incarnation of this guide – please give us feedback and suggest improvements in the Cheap Calls forum thread.

Thank you Goat Counter somethings are as light as day and you miss it.
I ring German mobiles , signed up with localphone where they offer not only voip but also call transfer so they ring you back and connect you for 3.9p a minute seems in this case, the VOIP all are terrible quality unless you have a suggestion possibly or anyone else
  • 18185 is 7p a minute (via their 0808 access number).

    Toolani is 3.3p a minute.

Both of the above are account based, i.e. you give them payment details (18185 is direct debit, Toolani is credit/debit card or PayPal).

Planet Numbers has a service where you top-up your account by sending them a £5 premium text message.

Alternatively you could look at calling from a mobile with a specialist SIM card - e.g. both GiffGaff and Lebara offer calls to German mobiles at 5p a minute.

All these providers will likely route calls via VOIP to an extent, so it's perhaps a case of trying them out to see which works best.
