Yes, it's always good advice on this forum to ignore people who try to help in a kind way.

Why are you leaving the washing of clothes to your wife? Can't you help? I also agree in telling your insurance, let them deal with the house repairs.
Oh for goodness sake. What a ridiculous question. Give the op a break.

OP this would have gone so much differently if you hadn't ended with a demand for a "suitable compensation package" - at that point all credibility was entirely lost and you went from having a somewhat reasonable grievance to boarding the compo train into I deserve money, gimme gimme gimme land.

Your tangible losses are laundrette bills, phone calls and perhaps the damage caused. Courts take a dim view on claims for time/stress/I'm now scared to do xyz etc and make their destain known for it by rewarding pitiful amounts.

Just to play devils advocate though; was the machine properly maintained, cleaned etc...?

That could well be a very important point.
The machine in question will be well over 3 years old and might be much older so could well have had a build up of dust and other debris inside.
There is also the possibility of damage done by rodents, something that can easily lead to fires.

OP it looks like this model already had a recall notice on it because of a known fault.

I would let you insurance company deal with all your repairs and once done approach the manufacturers for compensation. It would be a good idea to keep track of all the additional expenses you've had and itemise them in your claim.

It's interesting to see that the manufacturer is keen to examine the burnt out machine (Hotpoint thread doubters please note).

Any legal wannabes reading this please substitute the word compensation with goodwill gesture if it will help.

Nobody doubted that Hotpoint didn't look at returned machines. Doubts where cast over your unsubstantiated accusation that they knew about it for x years and did nothing based off the back of your theory that just because they'd received a couple of machines back they should have issued a multi-million pound recall.

It generally will help, "compensation" is thrown around far too much on here - it's a very 'legal' word that has implications for the company involved if they're seen to agree to pay "compensation".

"Gesture of goodwill" is a far better term IMO, as it has no legal implications as such and is overall a much friendlier word than "compensation".

Not that it matters anyway, OP isn't going to get any "compensation" nor is he entitled to. I have a feeling OP has £ signs in his eyes and is probably expecting a payout of several thousand pounds over a "could have" type situation which never happened.

Next he will be telling us how his wife has had to go to the doctors because of "stress" and no doubt needs therapy before she can use another washing machine ever again, an extra few grand should cover it...

Then the company will offer a replacement machine, but OP will refuse claiming that he no longer trusts that brand, etc....

This stuff pretty much writes itself these days on MSE. Gone are the days of being reasonable about things - instead people want "compensating" for everything under the sun.

I was fully behind OP before the usual slush about compensation and hypothetical drama made an appearance.
