what does"RETURNED DD" On my bank statement?

Before posting here i have looked at other threads. However from what i can gather it seems that these people are saying money has been taken out under RETURNED DD on their statement. This is why i'm confused, because under RETURNED DD on my bank statement it is showing money in. Does any one know what this means?
I was returned 17.00 (which i know is for my phone bill as i received a text message from Three saying my payment failed)

I think it means Three tried to take money from your account, which your bank for one reason or another initially processed but then reversed. There should be at least one other transaction on your statement relating to this.
    1. Did you own money to Three?
    2. Had you authorised Three to take money from your account?
    3. Was there enough money in your account to pay Three when the DD was debited?
    4. Is your Three service still working?

Its a DD that has failed probably due to funds, you seem to have answered your own question though, your phone bill is due by DD and it was returned due to insufficient funds probably.

DD are taken in the morning of the due date and you have till a certain time in the day to put any funds in to cover the payment (normally 3pm) if DD is not covered it will bounce at 5pm that day.

I doubt if anyone has said that the end result of a Returned DD is money out, unless they are the DD originator. DDs only ever go one way, and a return goes the opposite way.
