Barclays Basic Current Account

Options
Hi all
Just a quick question. Are contactless cards usually issued on this account?
I've had one of these accounts since the days when it was a Cash Card Account and only came with an ATM card and limited facilities. I haven't used it since 2014 but I got a payment into the account so I ordered a new card as the other one is somewhere in my mums house 200 miles away. Card arrived today and I was surprised to see it was contactless- is this usual? I used the card to pay for lunch today in Subway and the contactless worked fine but I just wondered if all the cards Barclays issued now are contactless.

  • I can't specifically answer about Barclays but some other banks do not issue contactless cards on their basic account.

Not unless Barclays upgraded your current account since 2014?

From what I'm aware of Santander, RBS and NatWest don't offer contactless cards to customers with 'basic' accounts (Lloyds, TSB and Halifax may be the same).

Nationwide do offer contactless cards to 'basic' account customers on their FlexBasic account.

That's really strange! Definitely hasn't been upgraded, I checked on Internet banking and on the last statement I was sent and it definitely says basic current account. Halifax and TSB by the way definitely don't give contactless cards to basic account customers- I have a Halifax basic account and it's just a Visa Debit and I used to have a TSB one and that was just a Visa Debit card too. My Lloyds is a full account although it doesn't have contactless facilities because it's a Chip and Sign card.
I had a Nationwide account for a very short period of time but closed it.

I've seen this post on their Facebook page which seems to confirm that they are doing this now: https://www.facebook.com/BarclaysUK/posts/1156648597703339?comment_id=1156652957702903

I couldn't find anything on their actual website though.

I don't believe they are generally issued, but I know from personal experience that they can be requested.

I have also heard of people with the Barclays Basic Current Account being issued with Contactless Visa Debit.

It's seems to be the same card that some Full Current Account customers (like me) have been issued. It begins 4658 and is an 'online' contactless card.

I believe the 'offline' cards begin 4659.

I have a Barclays Basic current account (they upgraded it from the cash card account a few months ago without any contact from me) I then got a text saying there was a 'problem' with my card and send me a new one (in fact they were so keen they sent me one twice which was a bit weird...) with the contactless thing on it so it looks like it might be a standard thing.

Thanks very much for the helpful answers! It does begin 4658- OH has the full offline card on a full account and his card begins 4659. Great idea for the contactless- I've used it a couple of times now and seems to work well. I have a personalised card so I didn't even notice it was contactless at first :D thanks again everyone.
