Defaulted twice on same debt

Checking my credit file on Noddle I've seen a default registered with a date of 28/9/2015 from Lowell.
This is for a debt that I was informed by letter that they purchased from the Shop Direct Group in Oct 2015.
Can they do this?
The amount on the default is also different to the outstanding balance at the time, is this something I need to or can address?
Previously a default had already been issued and recorded on my credit file, when the account was with SDG.
Checking also Clearscore and the £2 online access to Experian, I can now no longer see any record of me ever holding this account with SDG, all history has gone.
I've cleared the debt now, so it shows as closed and satisfied. Its annoying though that I've had this default registered so recently. The next default is back is 2011. Now it looks like my credit file is trashed for a further 5 years.
