Fence in a listed building garden
We have a low wall at the end of our garden which backs onto an alley way. We want tour up a fence behind our wall so we aren't as over looked but my question is can we do this as we live in a listed building? And if we can't in reality will anyone tell us to take it down?

Only one one way to find out
Seriously, we have a listed house/garden and just contact the council for planning permission when we want to do something. We had to in early spring to gain permission to prune fruit trees. Maybe worth a shot,...0 -

Wow! What about cutting the grass?0 -
Surely, if someone applies for PP they must send in plans and a fee to cover the cost, so what you're talking about in relation to tree pruning is something different, like Listed Building Consent. Of course, one does not preclude the other.
In any event, the wall at the end of the garden may be regarded as part of the listed structure, so putting a tall fence behind it could be seen as altering its character.
While as the custodian of an historic property you may not be required to allow viewings , you may be sure that people in the local area will notice if the public view is restricted, and a few will be likely to take that further with the council.
For this reason, I wouldn't advocate a 'try it and see' approach myself.0 -
Planning have telephones. Invite them over for tea & cake & advice? (Possibly include your neighbours?)

Anything to do with listed buildings or their grounds would be best advised to adhere to any covenant and restrictions applied to the deeds if clarity is needed I would have thought ringing the planning department at the council and asking them would be a way forward or even looking to the land registry department for guidance.0

The deeds or registered title may refer to covenants/restrictions but these rarely relate direct to a property's listing
Historic England define listed buildings in this way - Listing marks and celebrates a building's special architectural and historic interest, and also brings it under the consideration of the planning system, so that it can be protected for future generations. - so a 'time' based scenario rather than what any deeds/owners may have imposed in the past.
We could only provide the registered details and whilst they may mention the boundaries the issue you are dealing with is often one best dealt with through the planning department as mentioned or in agreement with the neighbouring landowner“Official Company Representative
