Fillinf hole in grass after tree stump removal

Options
I removed a tree and its stump out the ground (grass) in the middle of my drive.

we now have a hole in th ground which i want to fill in.

i was thinking compost/soil from with a bit of the shredded branches from our shredder thrown in? then i will put some grass seeds on top?

will this work? anything cost effective?

Use a topsoil/compost/sand mix just compost will sink leaving a dip in that patch, avoid the shredded branches as they will also likely make it sink.

Decomposing wood chips take all the nitrogen, so you'd end up with a patch of yellowing grass.

Can you fill it with soil taken from somewhere else in the garden?

Put in a layer, compact it as much as possible, add another layer, compact, repeat. Leave it standing a bit proud to allow for settlement. Add seed.

If it does settle a bit, you can bring the level back up by putting a thin layer of soil on the top and letting the new grass grow through.

Just fill it with mud! Or chuck some rubble in then some mud from the borders, to get rid of the rubble! Either way I wouldn't worry about what you put in there too much.

I agree, you are over-thinking this.

Whatever you do, it will likely sink a little, but don't leave the infill standing too proud like a contractor did in my field. Despite the best efforts of 50 sheep over two winters, I still have a small ridge where a drain went in!

Turn the hole into a pond?
