Peeling paint above shower!

Can anyone offer any advice?

I have painted above and around my shower but the paint just peels off after a while to reveal the bare plaster.

I always use matt paint as I am not keen on shiny paint

I have tried priming the plaster as suggested in manuals (watered down paint)

Do I need to prime with a oil based paint here?

hi starfish, can you answer a couple questions first before I advise you.

Have you painted over new plaster, if so, what paint did you use, did you use a 'supermatt', or a 'Vinyl matt'
or, have you painted over existing paint, if so, what paint was already there, ie, silk, matt.
And what make paint have you just used now.
  • I have always used a good quality matt paint like Dulux or Crown. There was only similar matt on when I first started. It always peels above the shower and close to shower. It peels back to bare plaster. I have never tried any other paint, but I have tried a watered down coat which hasn,t worked once you start scraping at it you can see it just has not stuck to the plaster as it is easy to scrape off. The plaster was done in the 70,s as it is a small extension to a period house.
