I've read the thread several times and can't see any 'blackmail' anywhere.
I've a feeling this is my mistake for confusing blackmail and coercion. Here's essentially what the LL said: "Pay for a new carpet yourself and give me £100 in cash and I'll refund the entirety of your deposit. If you don't commit to either of those things I'll fabricate cleaning, state and redecorating costs". That doesn't feel fair to me, but perhaps you're right it was a knee jerk reaction by myself.0 -

Let me try this another way:
Pay me £100 or I'll take you to court for £100 and make up evidence - does any of that seem logical?0 -

Close enough, the numbers weren't equal; he made DPS seem like the unfavourable option, how about this:
Give me £100 and buy a new carpet and you'll get 100% of your deposit back, go directly to DPS for anything and you'll get 50% of your deposit back as I'll make up evidence.0 -

Right and at that point you thought: My Landlord is a genius! Why did no-one think of this before?! He's broken the system!! This man is a living legend, he's played the law and won!
I'm sorry and you've essentially been given all the advice you need and that may seem a bit dramatic - but it's for the purposes of highlighting the actual situation.
It may well be worth considering some research into contract and the law so as not to get caught out in the future.0 -
Reply:
Give me my deposit back in full or I'll
a) go to DPS and make up lies to ensure I get my full deposit back AND
b) go to the police and get you arrested for using your door key to steal my jewelry
If we get into the arena of 'making stuff up' there's no end to the possibilities.0
