Power washing roof and painting?

We have had a leaflet through the door and elderly neighbours have invited the bloke round for a quote.

He cleans the roof of lichen/moss, then paints it to look like a Spanish hacienda.

We are wary but I think our neighbours (80 years plus) are keen.

Is this a big con?

IT'S A CON

They charge almost as much as a new roof. The power washing normally does more harm than good and the paint starts to fade after a couple of years.

Chances are your roof is perfectly OK as it is, just nicely weathered in and good for another 50 years.

Try to dissuade your neighbours, these companies do like to prey on the elderly who are just too trusting and fall for their smooth sales patter.

The house opposite me had the roof pointlessly jet washed. The same people also claimed to be tree surgeons and butchered a previously very nice Copper Beech tree.

If you cannot dissuade them suggest they seek advice from a roofer about whether this is necessary or wise.
