Non-owner Car Insurance
Hi!
Me and my partner are currently living in Canada, but have a lease/contract car scheme back in the UK.
As we were only half way through the contract duration when we had to leave, we decided to allow my Father to drive the car in our absence.
The issue we are now having is trying to get the car insured in my Father's name, as he is not the registered owner. We are unable to add him as a second driver as we will not be there to drive the car 51% of the time, but it seems no insurer will take him on as the main driver due to not owning the car!
This all seems a but daft to us, but as I understand it the risk from the insurers perspective is not being the owner he will be less likely to care whether he damages the car or not....
Any help or possible insurers would be very much appreciated!

Can't you just transfer your father onto the V5 as the registered keeper?0

More Than will insure a main driver who is not the owner.0

I have never had a problem having the main driver not being the owner.
Have two policies at the moment and the one that is now on the Picanto used to cover the Clio and had the wife as the main driver but the policy in my name and the car was registered to our company, all declared properly.
The Citroen was the in my name with the wife as the main driver and registered in my name.
Now all the cars are in my name and I am the main driver of the Citroen and she is the main driver of the Picanto.
Insured with SwiftCover and Axa, though Swiftcover is basically Axa!0 -
I didnt think you could take out insurance in the UK if you are not resident here.0

Can't your father take out insurance on the car in his name, and add you as the second driver?I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
(except air quality and Medical Science)

I think the test for residency in this respect is having an address and paying bills here.
It is not uncommon for people to be resident in several countries and their cars in the various countries are all kept Insured and often used by employees or family when the owner is out of the country.0
