Cheddar Gorge questions

Planning a day at Cheddar Gorge.

Have done a little research and basically want to walk around the top then have a drive through. Not too fussed about caves etc.

My main question is can anybody tell me about free parking within easy walking distance of the Gorge?
I have read that there is parking at the reservoir. Please can anybody confirm this for me and how near is it to the Gorge circular walk?

Thanks in advance

  • Theres a big pay and display at the bottom ( reasonable ) and some more when you hit the shops on the way up ( overpriced )

We always park in the one at the bottom as its a bit of a nightmare parking wise and theres not much that near Im afraid.

Walking wise from the resovior is about 2.5-3 miles

Although the largest Cheddar is a bit touristy. Even so ascending the steep hill up to the cliffs results in a pretty good view! The path isn't great but it's not a long walk. I've always parked further up the gorge for free and walked down.

I would also strongly recommend the nearby Ebbor Gorge (or even Burrington Coombe) for a more 'natural' experience. The circular walk to the top of Ebbor Gorge is good and a bit more exciting (although still easily doable for walkers).
