  • Absolutely not! If you really don't like it, then choose a head of broccoli with a short stalk. Don't throw the stalk away - trim and chop it for crudit!s, add to stir fry, soups, stews and salads; or spiralise it.

If you are making soup, use the stalks as once blitzed up, can't tell.

Supermarkets have to weigh the remains of the unsold broccoli, including left behind stalks. If loads of wastage, prices may increase

I've never heard of anyone doing this but I don't see a problem with it. I'm certainly going to have a glance over the loose broccoli next time I'm in the supermarket to see how many unwanted stalks have been left behind - if others are doing it, might have a go myself, leave the stalk behind for a soup lover...
  • I don't snap off the stalks myself, but pick up any I see discarded, also the green leaves off carrots, if someone's removed them, and ask the staff if I can have them for my tortoise - they've never said no, and occasionally, offer me some free leaves from veg on or over due date. But usually, it would just get landfilled, which seems a pity. Lots of nutrition in the bits we throw away, like potato skins!

Wow never heard of anyone doing that before! I like the stalks but even if I didn't it wouldn't occur to me to snap them off. How bizarre!

NO! What a waste, i look for the fattest stalk with the biggest white inner.
Peel the outer husky layer off (easy as you can see a clear line between the inner and outer) as this is woody. Then slice the sweet white core thinly and use in Chinese meals to replace water chestnuts, tastier same texture and a lot cheaper.

I don't eat orange peel, but I don't peel them before I buy them, I don't eat banana skins etc... You get my drift?
  • I used to snap and run too but then I was served broccoli in a restaurant and it included peeled and sliced stalks. Almost nicer than the green tops ! When you really think about it, it is theft since the store has to pay by weight.
