my employers attitude to benefits

hello - I am currently working part time in shop. this is a franchise of a national company. I work part time due to childcare commitements and due to a recent change in personal circumstances i am reluctantly going to have to claim some help with my rent.
My concern is my employer. She is scathing about people who claim. So if I can claim any housing benefit I would be reluctant to do so if the council will be contacting her. I'll be able to supply wage slips etc but if the council will be contacting her I think she will make me feel uncomfortable at work. cant afford to start looking for another job as this one ties in perfectly with school hours so I dont have to pay for child care and as its more or less on the doorstep I dont have any travel expenses..
Is it usual for the council to contact employers if Ive supplied all my wage details?

Rest assured that the council will not contact your employer - good old data protection restrictions will not allow them to do so.
Your Housing Benefit claim is subject to data protection and there is no way that the council would contact your employer as that would reveal that you had made a claim to Housing Benefit and they would be breaching data protection and be in big trouble for doing so!
    Put your claim in :D
