"back packing" with the kids?

Hi,
I'd like to take my kids on a mini "back pack" tour around Europe next year (They want to go to Spain, Italy and Germany). I've never done anything like it so no idea where to look with regards to planning (And keeping costs down!)
Can someone point me in the right direction?
Thanks in advance

If you want a bit of inspiration do a search for Mr Wang's recent postings. He has a brilliant blog linked of his amazing backpacking adventure with his children.0

Tripadvisor is a good start and there are some knowledgeable people on the forums. You need to come up with an outline plan for good areas and then see if that's workable, the initial problem with your itinerary is that you're missing out on France, logistically it would b better to ditch one of you three countries and replace it with France.
Man in seat 61 is great for train planning, and there are numerous hubs for budget airlines across the continent, though I'm not sure that really in the back packing spirit.0 -

Deifinately get in touch with Mr Wang. I'm sure he's still around under one guise or other0 -
A good place to start would be by looking at Interrail tickets and European youth hostels.

I have 2. The eldest is nearly 9 and this was partly her idea as she wanted to visit multiple places. Other is 5, she's happy if there's ice creamTripadvisor is a good start and there are some knowledgeable people on the forums. Ah skipping France was intended. We've been - lots of times to various places. The novelty has worn off I'm afraid. I'll have a look at Man in seat 61 - Thanks!0 -
Rather than hostels airbnb might work for you ?
I was looking last night for where to stay in Lithuania and I could book an entire flat for a quarter of the cost of a (not wonderful) hotel room.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole
MSE Florida wedding .....no problem0 -
Thanks! I've look on airbnb already today and found that actually they are cheaper for what we need than a hostel - and on some the owners will even pick you up at the airport
