Overdraft + Credit rating = :-(

Options
Hi guys and gals, I need some advice if you would be so kind!

I recently checked my credit rating and I have been rated as “Very poor.” Looking further into it, the rating is due to a Halifax student overdraft defaulting for quite a few years. The account was opened in 2006/7, in 2010/11 I updated address details to my residence at the time. Since then, I had completely forgotten about it as it was not my primary account, and I had a separate overdraft with another bank (a poor decision having two ODs I know, but free money is free money when you’re young, stupid and wanting fun! I regret it only a little bit now…).

Due to a lack of response from me after around 2012, the Halifax decided to cease all communications. This included via telephone, even though I have had the same number for coming on 10 years now and it will have been the one they had on my records. The defaulting was due to the non-communication and my sieve-like brain, not to do with lack of funds.

I would like the Halifax to place a note on my account or something that will increase my rating a bit as I intend to move to Sweden where they perform credit checks for rentals, amongst other things. Obviously “Very poor” will make things difficult for me, unless the Swedes do not use the same ratings as us. I have since brought the account to within my OD limit and am beginning to pay back both ODs (painful to say the least!), but obviously 6 years, etc, etc.

Does anybody have any tips on how to proceed with this? A representative from the Halifax that I spoke to last week said to write in with details of the situation, but any tips on how to phrase the letter or anything else I have not thought of that may help would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Tom
