Barclaycard cancelled before the card reached me

Hi all.

I recently applied for a Barclaycard and was successful in getting one with a £10k credit limit. I was going to use it to B/T just under this amount and close old cards down. I had recently had a successful application for a Halifax credit card as well.

Upon receipt of the card, I tried to create an online log in and do a balance transfer. After much to-ing and fro-ing, a rather brusque lady in the call centre told me the account had been closed because "their lending criteria had changed".

It doesn't seem there is much I can do about it, however, I would have expected that the FCA would require Barclaycard to write to me and inform me of the closure, rather than just close it without any notice. 2 months on I still have had no written communication from them to advise me that the account has been closed. I could have made significant financial decisions based on being given the card in the first place and I am wondering if they have broken any rules and if I could seek redress?

Any info gratefully received.

No, you've obviously failed their secondary checks.

I would still raise a complaint over the fact Barclaycard have not notified you that you have not been successful and give you an idea why, credit score etc, similar to a reject letter. Many threads on here about people in the same boat as you, barclays is probably the worse fro this kind of action.

A complaint should at least give you an answer and possible a small financial compensation for your trouble.

Good luck and let us know how the complaint goes.

Their reply will be that you dont meet their lending criteria and to check with Experian and Equifax for anything adverse on your credit record (regardless on whether its as clean as a whistle, its the standard response) - they wont go into why they rejected you.

Sorry to hear that - I really thought Barclaycard had moved away from doing this - there were a number of cases of similar situations happening about two years ago. I don't think there's much you can do I'm afraid, look elsewhere.
Never argue with an idiot. Especially not this idiot because I'm always right anyway.
