Lapsed car insurance

Due to my own stupidity (!), I let my car insurance lapse for the last 15 months. I have since MOT'ed my car and insured it (through Swift) and they are naturally asking for proof of my No Claims Bonus. I sent them proof as of 15 months ago (9 years NCB) and they are now asking for details of my car insurance for the last 15 months, which I obviously cannot provide.

Can anyone give me some advice as to my best options ??

Many thanks in advance for any advice.

There are no options - you can only be truthful.

Explain to them that the car has not been insured for the past 15 months. There is a fair chance that they may not ask as to the circumstances as it is perfectly legitimate to take vehicles 'off the road' for periods of time. You might even hang onto your NCB. I seem to recall that, in my past experience, NCB will be allowed for up to 2 years after a policy has lapsed - depending on the underwriter. (I did this some years ago with a motorcycle policy where I had a period without a bike but my NCB from the last policy was still allowable) I do not know if this has changed but you have no option but to be honest in any case.

    Advice for what?

Tell them you've not been insured, the only way to deal with this is honesty as they'll find you out and if they cancel your policy you're in for a whole lot more grief in future.

NCB lasts "off a policy" for 2yrs.

You're telling them "Well, I had 9yrs NCB 15mo ago" - and they're quite reasonably saying "Yes, but what about now?". For all they know, that NCB might be in use on another policy, or have been lost through a claim.

Was the car in question declared off road/SORN'd? - if so, then no problem, tell Swift and all will be fine.
If this car was not declared SORN or insured then just out of interest how could you tax it - was it insured by someone else during this time (a spouse, for instance)

Have you been driving any car for the last 15 months?

As already stated, they are trying to run checks as some people might try and use their previous NCB letter when they have had a recent accident on their later insurance and therefore seen an NCB reduced - handy to have a letter that shows a greater NCB in those circumstances for the less-honest.

I am sure that the insurance are asking about your driving history though and not the cars history.

Why would they want to know anything about your insurance for the last 15months when you have provided them with your proof of NCD dated 15months ago?

How can you forget to renew when you have your proof of NCD?

Oh and out of interest was this UK NCD or Jersey?

Why not just tell them you were living the expat life in Jersey?

See post #5. When someone has a bad claims year, its not unknown for them to use an older NCD proof to try to forget the bad year.

This is the norm whenever there is a gap between the date of the NCD and the proposed start date of the new policy.

All insurers will want to know why there is a gap, and require an explanation, as well as a declaration that you have been claim free during the gap.
