Ive worked for my company since april 3 2011 which works out over 5 years now,i asked about my 5 years reward of a extra 5 days holiday, and after a wait for a answer i was told that I will have to wait until april 2017 ,which will be nearly a full year more ,as ive missed the cut off date of march the 31st.My normal holidays run from april the 1st to 31st of march ,my contract only states 5 years service gives you 5 extra days and doesnt state any cut off point.

How do you think random posters on a forum can help? You need to escalate this within your HR department.0

If you're going down that route I would argue it also doesn't say when it starts from either.Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked0

Every company I've worked only issues things like this at the end of the year in which the anniversary falls, ie if you achieve a long service award, it is given in the June following as that is when the company meeting is.
So it would work in some employees favours but not others, but it has to be done like that otherwise it would be a logistical nightmare trying to do things on each employees exact anniversary.0 -
I have also had extra days of leave granted in the next holiday year (I.e. Usually in January or April following the anniversary).
The same often goes for bonuses or pay rises, anyone within probation isn't eligible even if they completed probation the next day (they would then have to wait an entire year until the next pay review).
I missed out closely on both in a couple of jobs - had to wait an extra 11.5 months for my extra day hols and missed a pay rise by a week. S* happens...0 -
Whilst at my previous employer, an extra days' annual leave was given after 2 years service. I completed my 2 years in July but had to wait until the following January to get my extra day as our annual leave year was Jan-December.
If you're only a few days out, is it worth asking if an exception can be made in your case or will open up issues for others in a similar position?0 -
Some employers award the extra days on the anniversary of starting (mine does) and others only in the next complete leave year. It's up to them, since they don't have to award it at all! provided everyone is treated the same way (and you will probably find that they are, and possibly even that there is a policy somewhere on this that's says it), then it is legal. Its an employee benefit above what the law requires, so the employer sets the rules.0

I think you will find it common practice that additional holiday entitlement is calculated at the start of the leave year. If your leave year starts 1st April and your 5 year anniversary was 3rd April you will have to wait until next year.0
