Buying cheap in West Yorkshire - advice please?

Hi! My husband and I are massively downsizing as we are forced to go mortgage free. We've only got a budget of around £100k and want to be around Leeds/Bradford. I've been looking in Idle and Shipley but Wakefield also seems cheap. We want to be in the best area we can afford. Can anyone advise on cheap but not 'den of iniquity'/'crime-ridden squalor' type areas?

  • Hi - I've only live in Leeds for 4 years so might get shot down, but for the price you want to pay I'd certainly consider this:

It's Wakefield, but it's on the border of Rothwell which is nicer (where I live). I walk past there quite a lot and I always think they would be great starter homes (or in your case a house you can buy for cash). It's a main road but not crazy busy and you can get the 110 bus from a few metres away which will get you into Leeds centre in about 10 minutes if the traffic is good.

Wakefield has a bad reputation, but it's a massive area, so don't let the district name put you off.

Good luck with your house hunting!

Look at Batley and Mirfield, and surrounding WF areas.
