hsbc loan, 4 years since default

Options
Hi all,

Quick question,

My husband defaulted on his loan around 4 years ago. He has made payments to clear it but still owes a fair amount. We want to start looking for a mortgage soon but she unsure of how this will appear on his credit report? If we wait another 2 years will it be taken off his credit file even if there is a small amount owing? ( by this point with payments he makes each month there will be a remaining balance of around £1000)

Or will it remain on his credit report for 6 years after its paid? We're very confused by all this so any advice will be much appreciated

Thanks
