I'm considering taking the family to the North Norfolk coast in a couple of weeks for the w/e. Any thoughts about nice towns up there? Considering Cromer but not really for any good reason.
Also, any recs for a hotel?

Cromers ok, depends what you want to do. Wells is a really nice little town and the beach is lovely, also hunstanton if you want a bit more to do, otherwise all the little towns around north norfolk are much the same. Sorry cant help you with hotels im afraid, I live in south norfolk and theres a nice river centre near me which I can recommend, theyve got chalets and caravans. In a village called burgh st peter, also if you did come this way burgh caste/belton is nice too.0

It'll be me, Mrs Generali and 2 toddlers. Very into good food. We like walking and 'taking the air' (it makes me sound like some Edwardian gent!).
We're looking for something a bit more Southwold than Great Yarmouth if you follow me.0 -
Yes I follow, he he, so forget hunstanton, wells is a bit more southwold like and so is cromer, dont really know many other places as between cromer and wells is generally small villages and not much else, oh and also sheringham, thats nice and quiet and the kids would like the train theyve got which runs between sheringham and Holt. Perfect. You have just made a little boy very happy.
Anyone else got any thoughts of where to stay? Don't care if it's hotel/self catering etc.0 -
What about Benchmark House. Any thoughts?0

How about hiring a luxury mobile home (or any suitably lower marque!) at Kelling Heath www.kellingheath.co.uk who have their own "Halt" on the North Norfolk Railway? (put your arm out to stop the train, but if it's one of their steam trains remember it can't stop going uphill, only on the downrun from HoltPerfect. You have just made a little boy very happy.

If that is a logistical problem, then you can get off at Weybourne station and walk up through the wood (15 minutes) to Kelling Heath again.
Kelling Heath has some good walks and sometimes there are organised walks including birdwatching and batwatching. Then down the road at Weybourne is the military vehicle museum where you can sometimes see a T34 or Chieftain or some such being put through its paces on a Sunday morning! (like the train, you'll hear it before you see it :j , and probably see the smoke before you see where it's coming from  ).
As for the foodie bit, I haven't sampled any but there are said to be some good restaurants / foodie pubs around Blakeney and inland a little from there catering for the local Chelsea set who have weekend homes there.
From Blakeney you can go out on a small boat to see the seals and birdlife out on Blakeney Point ... a long spit of land deposited over the last few hundred years which more or less landlocked Blakeney and Cley-next-the-Sea (which isn't any more:p ) which used to both be prosperous seaports facing each other across a narrow bay.
There is a small campsite just uphill from Cley which I've used and which has a great view of the valley with three churches in view, built by rich local merchants (around the now dry port), and even a fourth can be heard!
I recall once staying just outside Holt at a small place called the Pheasant Hotel I think near Letheringsett. I think they are still advertising. I remember it as a pleasant enough B&B. My parents liked it. Yes here we are ... the website looks promising ... not a B&B but a 2* hotel ... www.pheasanthotelnorfolk.co.uk
There's also a fully working watermill you can visit closeby www.letheringsettwatermill.co.uk
There's a castle to visit too in an unlikely location at the end of a farmer's concrete road at Baconthorpe near Holt.
Have a good weekend
PS If you are thinking of going around 14-16 September do note (if you haven't already from the earlier special events post) the North Norfolk Railway's Forties Weekend which is enormous fun in or out of period costume! However it will put a lot of pressure on accommodation availability all around Sheringham and Holt. Better get booking!0 -
I don't know if we would be able to help but we have two luxury caravans situated on the Haven site at Caister (you could use the caravan purely as a base if you wish without using their facilities). if interested just let me know and I shall pass you details of our website.
Thanks

Great hotel + pub - gets very very busy at b/hols and weekends tho !! Right on the beach/dunes for miles of golden sands !!
Another vote for Wells !!
Or hows about hiring a Boat for the weekend (or day) - ideal for seing the broads you can self cater or stop off at one of the many pubs enroute !!!
