underpaid by to credits but still paying back an overpayment

Hi all,

I wrote a thread recently and it became apparent that tax credits owe me around £1300 from last year (£6000 drop in income last year 15/16)

As of this tax year my overpayment from a couple of years back stands at £1600. They are taking 50% of my weekly payment off me which is £64 to pay it back.

My question is will the just use what they underpaid me to pay off what I owe? I would rather them do this so my weekly payments will return to where they should be.

Is it worth me ringing to have it noted that any money they owe me is to pay what I owe? I've been paying this back for about 2 years now and just want it cleared!

Any advice would be much appreciated

Thanks

If they don't and pay it back as a lump sum you can just send it back to them.

I believe it it's the same claim (aka not a single claim and now it's a couple etc) then it's automatically offset, but if it isn't you can just send it

    Thanks for the reply!

Do you know how I'd go about paying it back if they do pay me a lump sum? I know that you tend to get a payment before you get a new claim notice.

    Thanks

I can only assume you ring up with debit card in hand and ask to pay off your previous overpayment.

Thanks Marlie. Never had to do it before. Thought maybe it would be done online but I'd rather do it over the phone.

I'm fairly certain I paid back an overpayment over the phone. Mine was only about £50 or so but I don't remember doing it online.
