My 2.5 Legacy runs on petrol, I can get 44mpg on a run, I drove to Italy, 3 passengers, lots of luggage with a large roof box & still got 37 mpg. The only problem with Subarus is the price of spares, but I have got around this every time. 2nd hand spares, spares imported from the US & a SS custom exhaust at 1/3 price of a Subaru main agent.
I'm also looking at German estates, mainly 330/530 estates, when I look, I really think they won't be as good a car as my 05 Legacy. So I'm keeping it for a while, as the cheapest car, is the one you already have!0 -
Avoid anything with the 2.5 tdi 24v V6 engine from VW/Audi (e.g an older A6). The camshafts seem to be made of chocolate and failure of the serpentine (alternator, power steering etc) belt will likely lead to the engine grenading itself just like failure of the timing belt.Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20230

You are correct. Subaru spares can be pricey, but let's be brutally honest you don't need very many.
When my 04 Legacy was stolen on 08 they reckoned it was likely targeted for spares, I was told the front bumper on it is £500 new at the time.
Sods got my Momo gearknob aswell.......
Mine was the economy version, single cam, and I rarely got it above 40mpg, though mine was Auto, the early 4speed, I believe later ones had a 5speed Auto which was better on fuel.
I actually found my Autobox oil filter yesterday in a box, never had time to fit it, exact same dimensions as the oil filter and marked with AT to stop confusion, though I believe later Subaru oil filters where blue, mine were always black.0 -
