Do you still have the paperwork from when you bought the house? One of the questions the property information forms asks the seller who owns or has taken responsibility for the boundaries, so this should give you an ideaAll posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)0

Boundary ownership/responsibility can be mentioned in the registered details (not on the title plan though) but the details invariably just form part of a wider picture, which can also include the property information forms TBagpuss mentions
IF the registered title does refer to the boundaries then often mention is made in the form of a personal covenant entered into by a previous buyer with the previous owner (seller). If the property has then changed hands during the years since then the odds are the covenant is no longer legally binding. So the details, if they exist, are often just for information purposes.
So the advice is to obtain whatever information, written or verbal, that is available to both you and the neighbour. Share understanding as well as what each of you would like to see happen and then agree a way forward.
