Credit score fail

Options
Hello,

I've just tried getting a mobile contract through carphonewarehouse with EE. My application failed because I failed the credit score check which I found extremely unorthodox. I won't get into my personal circumstances in full but suffice to say that I've never defaulted on multiple credit cards and/or contracts I've had and banks offered me up to £200,000 for my re-mortgage just now, what is then a £15 mobile contract in comparison...

It is not the lack of contract however that's eating me, rather these things:

1) Why has it failed? I read recently that when a company fails my credit check they have an obligation to give me a reason, even if just the main reason for not accepting me. I called EE customer service and got the same answer 3 times over the phone "we don't know why, you need to go check your credit score on e.g. experian. you can then send us your credit rating via an email and we can overturn that decision based on that". Is that a reasonable answer? Or do I have the right to know the grounds for the failure as I've read?

2) Has that failed check hurt my credit score and how much?

Any thoughts on the above subject?

And on a side note, if I already registered with experian years ago (and cancelled within 30 days of course) can I still register and get a free credit score check? Or are their competition my only option(s)?

Thank you very much for any help with the above!

First of all you didn't fail the credit score check but the credit check. You don't have a credit score lenders can see, you can only see it.

Just because you have been offered upto £20k it doesn't mean your entitled to a phone contract. Each lender, phone companies run your credit file through an internal system to determine if you get a contract or not.

Can you point me in the direction of a lender has to tell you why you failed a credit check, I didn't think they had to tell the reason for the fail.

A search is recorded on your credit and that's it, a fail isn't recorded.

There's 2 other reference agencies, you can still get the £2 report from Experian.
  • It was at 'this is money' website that I read "simply telling you that you failed the credit check is not sufficient - industry guidelines mean that they should at least be able to tell you the main reason for their decision." I also only wrote about the re-mortgage offer to underline the fact that my credit score has been and should be through the roof and thus I'm shocked at what happened, just trying to find out why...
