Kennel cough vaccine

Just wondering peoples views on kennel cough vaccine?

I'm taking my dog in this afternoon after being told by my dog walker that one of his regular dogs has kennel cough.
I was offered kennel cough vaccine at last vet visit for boosters but i didn't think it was necessary at the time.

Chances are he may have already been exposed but best to get it anyway i think

Anyone's dogs ever had this? I'm led to believe its not all that serious

The vaccine is like the flu vaccine, it doesn't always work on the stain of Kc that's present

I had to vaccinate my lad one time to go into kennels, guess what? He came back with KC

Treatment is cough medicine same as humans.

I only get mine done as the boarding kennels insist on it.
There are 101 different strains of KC and the vaccine only covers a few of them. At best it might lessen symptoms or shorten duration ....... or do nothing!
Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree! :D

My dog had the kennel cough vaccine last September & she had a runny nose & very sniffly for about 2 weeks after. I won't get it done again unless she actually needs it.

My dogs have never been in kennels,so the only time they had it was when ,for a short while, it was included in the multiple vaccines. This was partly because the vet said that, (as mentioned above) there are too many strains to have all covered.

Some years ago,the trainer for a class we attended, informed us that our dogs could be at risk as one of his competition dogs had caught KC at a show ( an unwell dog was seen being sent home by the attending vet).

Oddly, all dogs in the class except mine and another cavalier caught KC, all three of the trainer's dogs also catching it, with one only coughing once,so perhaps some dogs have immunity.

thanks for all the feedback. Got the vaccine done yesterday on vets recommendation.
Will wait and see if we see any runny nose/sneezing...

oh yeah haha i realised that! :rotfl:
£30 but i think maybe cheaper if you include it with yearly boosters

I never give my dogs kennel cough, parainfluenza or leptospirosis vaccinations. The risks of having those vaccines far outweighs any benefits, which are little to none considering the vast array of strains available which are not covered by the vaccines anyway.

One strain of KC 9 parainfluenza) is included on the annual booster but as said there are many other strains. It is an upper respiratory infection same as we get a cold. In puppies, old dogs and those with a compromised immune system it can lead to more serious conditions.

It is spread by dogs sneezing/coughing and leaving germs where another dog sniffs them. Dogs in the same household as an infected dog are likely to contract it also from contact with toys, dishes etc.

Dogs who are vaccinated can be infectious for a while afterwards.

A friend who owns kennels does not ask for KC vaccine but insists ,if you do get it done, it must be done more than 2 weeks before coming into kennels. If you have had it done it within these two weeks she will not accept the dog.

The kennels I use do not ask for it but also use a two week exclusion period before coming in.

In over twenty years of business he has never had a problem.

Last year my vet tried to persuade me get it done when my dog had her booster, saying there were several dogs in the area with it however, I declined as there is guarantee that the vaccine is the appropriate one.

The parainfluenza (Pi) is only included in certain vaccines, you can certainly have DHP without it included. And DHP is only needed every 3 years rather than annually anyway.

In fact, not many dogs even need a further booster beyond their first annual vaccinations at 2 years old. You can have bloods tested (titred) for immunity levels to check whether they require a booster. And many kennels now accept the blood results in place of a vaccination certificate.
