Bereavement Payment/Allowance

Hi all
MIL passed recently aged just 59, her surviving husband is of a similar age.
I've just become aware of bereavement payment and allowance and wonder if he is eligible, if so i'll let him know in case he's not aware of it.
Does anyone know what 'enough' NI payments MIL would have to have paid to be eligible? She had not worked for a number of years due to ill health/amputation, so i assume she was receiving ESA/PIP. Is it just a case of applying and letting HMRC decide if she's paid enough?

Sorry for your loss.
This is an overview of bereavement payments.

As regards the NI contributions then if your MIL was receiving ESA then she was likely to be receiving class 1 NI credits which count towards bereavement benefits.
You don't say whether your FIL is working or receiving benefits himself.
Might be a good idea for him to get a benefit check up from CAB or AgeUK.0 -
Thanks for that
Wasn't sure if class 1 credits counted or not, hence the question, i remember my wifes ESA claim being denied because she hadn't paid enough NI, thought this may be the same. (though i think that was class 3 contributions that didn't count)
(step)FIL works full time, so is not currently receiving anything AFAIK.
I'll print off the form BB1 and give it to him, can't hurt to apply even if he ends up with nothing.

I agree with you - just get your FIL to apply and hope for the best.0
