Well it's going to be cheaper to at least try reviving it- any lawn fertiliser will help from DIY shed of choice or a garden centre

I think some watering and lawn fertiliser has given it a lift, thanks a lot, I will do this for some more time and see how it goes and post more pics.
One more question please, I raked the lawn and got a lot of dead grass, I only did a small portion and I will do more this week, the emtply patches that are left, I will go to wilkinson and buy grass seeds. Should I put the seeds as it is or should I mix them with some top soil and fertiliser and then put it in.

We've had similar issues in our garden. Its so big and on so many different levels we decided to split it off into different sections, play area, bedding area, patio etc. You can then work with those individual areas. Its not the best but its getting there and we've been doing it on and off for around 3 years now, you can save a fortune doing the work yourself. Everything has been done by us

From your pics it doesn't look that bad. Nice area along the edge for a nice border of plants, grass is not that bad condition just needs a good raking, overseed and some lawn conditioner on it. My first priority with kids though would be to negotiate with the neighbours/sort out the fencing either side to make it safe for the kids
Even a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day, and for once I'm inclined to believe Withnail is right. We are indeed drifting into the arena of the unwell.
