I've lived in loads of different 1 and 2 beds, but generally go by square footage and layout over room number. I would much prefer a 500sq ft 1 bed to 500 sq ft 2 bed.

As time goes on, I find myself with less and less stuff due to digitisation, so struggled to utilise the second bedroom. I work from home also, but sitting in a big room with a laptop and a phone (which doubles as a scanner) seemed overkill. Seems I need more real world hobbies.
  • Another singleton in a 1,300-square-foot, three-bed detached house here.

It's a 1970s-built house with big windows. The first lounge (16x10) faces East so it's warmer in the winter, while the other one (17x12) faces West. I've just moved the telly and various bits and bobs from one room to another, to take advantage of the sun.

I don't find it much more of a chore to keep it reasonably clean than the two-bed flat I was renting about 10 years ago. Having the extra space means I'm not bumping into any furniture or having to worry if I want to add a bookcase or something similar.

And given the new boiler and high-efficiency radiators I had put in a few years back, it doesn't cost a crazy amount to heat.

Bedroom-wise, big one for me, smallest one is a study and the middle one for the occasional guest.

Can't beat a bit of space, plus I've turned one of the two garages into a workshop.

I'm single, got my first house 8 years ago.

Its a 4 bed 3 storey house (i work from home so needed at least 1 spare room for the office) but honestly i got the biggest house i could afford!

In terms of affordability too, I'd rather own a smaller house outright, than have to stress on a mortgage on a bigger place. But I suppose I'll likely miss out on HPI.
  • Is this a "waste"?

    Would 1 bedroom be better?

    Any MSE loners/singletones have experience?

I'm a single person and am on the verge of buying a 3 bedroom house; when I'm done with it it'll be a 4 bedroom house.

Why would 1 bedroom be better? More bedrooms = better.

Have you seen those cool NY style loft studio apartments you get in the states, some up to 2000 sq ft, bigger than a 3 bed semi in floorspace. I've seen a couple in the UK I was tempted by. Loads of space, areas separated by furniture and plants, but no walls.

Not great for guests but guess I'm just selfish
